Did I Miss Anything?

Nothing. When we realized you weren’t here
we sat with our hands folded on our desks
in silence, for the full two hours

Everything. I gave an exam worth
40 percent of the grade for this term
and assigned some reading due today
on which I’m about to hand out a quiz
     worth 50 percent

Nothing. None of the content of this course
has value or meaning
Take as many days off as you like:
any activities we undertake as a class
I assure you will not matter either to you or me
and are without purpose

Everything. A few minutes after we began last time
to attain divine wisdom in this life and
     the hereafter
This is the last time the class will meet
before we disperse to bring the good news to all people
          on earth.

Nothing. When you are not present
how could something significant occur?

     Everything. Contained in this classroom
is a microcosm of human experience
assembled for you to query and examine and ponder
This is not the only place such an opportunity has been
          gathered

     but it was one place

     And you weren’t here

  • Reviewed and discussed classroom and school expectations regarding behavior, privileges and cell phone use.
    •  Averett classroom expectations regarding cell phone use.
    • Cell phones are to be powered off BEFORE entering classroom.  This is in accordance with district and school rules that cell phones are not to be on during the school day.
    • Entering the classroom is considered when students cross through the doorway and into the classroom.  Cell phones should be turned off and kept out of sight BEFORE  they enter the room.  Students turning off and putting away cell phones after they have entered the classroom are in violation of this rule.
    • Consequences for not meeting these expectations:
    • First offense:  Students will be asked to give the cell phone to Mrs. Averett until the end of class.  She will return the phone at the end of class and the student will not be written up for an official discipline referral at this time - as long as they quickly and immediately comply with the expectations.  If student chooses to not comply they will be written up and given a teacher detention.
    • Second offense:  Student will be expected to immediately
give the cell phone to Mrs. Averett until the end of class on this day AND EVERY DAY AFTER UNTIL THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.  She will return the phone at the end of class and the student will not be written up for an official discipline referral at this time - as long as they quickly and immediately comply with the expectations.  IT IS THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY TO REMEMBER TO GIVE THE PHONE TO MRS. AVERETT AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS.  If student does not comply they will be written up an official administration discipline referral.  Students will also immediately be written up each day they do not give Mrs. Averett their phone for the duration of the class.
    • This applies to all events happening in and out of the classroom during the period in which the student has Mrs. Averett.  Includes field trips, testing, and assemblies.
